What it is, how it differs from a Foundation Degree and what to check before choosing.
Returning to education can feel exciting and daunting, especially if you have been working for years or your previous education followed a different route. A Foundation Year is an additional year at the beginning of certain undergraduate degrees. It develops the preparation needed to continue, and you must pass it to progress.
That does not mean starting from the beginning in every area. The useful question is whether the preparation leads towards the degree you actually want. Look for a clear connection between that first year, later modules and your interests.
A degree with a Foundation Year and a Foundation Degree are different qualifications. A separate preparatory programme is another possibility. Before choosing, check the full course title, the final award and the progression conditions.
Ask what happens after you pass: which course you continue to, where you study and which results you need. That answer is more useful than choosing a title because one familiar word appears in it.
Compare two or three options using the same questions. Enjoying the subject matters, but you also need to attend, make time for independent study and sustain the commitment throughout the programme. Confirm timetables for the specific campus and intake.
Funding cannot be confirmed from the phrase Foundation Year alone. Official guidance distinguishes tuition support by the type of programme. Your start date matters too: courses beginning from January 2027 require you to check which funding route applies.
Compare the preparation year’s fees with those for later years. If funding information is marked as awaiting confirmation, ask before making a financial commitment.
Explore the catalogue and open the pages for courses that interest you. Note what you want to learn, where you can travel and what you need to understand about entry. That gives us a useful starting point to help you organise your options and prepare an application.
You do not need to know every university term to begin. You do need a study route you understand and can realistically commit to.
